"Scientists from the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center at Colorado University are saying that the Arctic ice cap has collapsed at an unprecedented rate this summer, leaving sea ice levels in the region at record lows.
Mark Serreze, an Arctic specialist from the center, said "It's amazing. It's simply fallen off a cliff and we're still losing ice." Serreze and others now feel that if the increased rate of melting continues, the summertime Arctic could be totally free of ice by 2030, which is much earlier than the estimates of 2070 to 2100 they made a couple of years ago.
According to the article from the Guardian Unlimited, the Arctic has now lost about a third of its ice since satellite measurements began 30 years ago. BTW, I did a piece on that story a few weeks ago.
Sea ice usually melts in the Arctic summer and freezes again in the winter, but according to Dr. Serreze, that would be difficult this year."

Now why are Brittany Spears or Lindsay Lohan's escapades more important? Maybe because they are distractions.
Might the companies representing them have an interest in distracting us?

Maybe the arctic ice cap should try accidentally flashing its vagina to the media. I hear it's a great way to get attention.
AS MORE ICE MELTS, THE RATE OF DECLINE IS NOT STEADY. LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE, IT IS ACCELERATING.
THUS THE MODEL KEEPS CHANGING TO REFLECT THE INCREASING RATE OF MELTING.
A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, THERE WAS AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY.
A REPORT WAS PRESENTED ON HOW ARCTIC WATERWAYS WOULD BE OPEN DURING A LONGER PART OF THE YEAR, DUE TO THIS MELTING PHENOMENON.
THE OFFICIAL RESPONSE OF THE INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVES WAS NOT, "HOW HAVE WE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS, AND WHAT CAN WE DO TO TRY AND SOLVE THE PROBLEM".
THE OFFICIAL RESPONSE WAS ONLY, "GREAT, THIS MEANS THAT WE CAN GET OUR TANKERS THROUGH THE AREA DURING MORE MONTHS THAN BEFORE AND INCREASE OUR PROFITS".
NOW THAT "THE MEDIA" IS BASICALLY A MONOPOLY BY MURDOCH AND A FEW OTHERS, IT IS EASY FOR THE CURRENT REGIME TO INSIST UPON NON-NEWS MONOPOLIZING THE AIRWAVES.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CITIZENS NOT TO LET LET THEMSELVES BECOME DISTRACTED.
SO FAR, TOO MANY HAVE BURIED THEIR HEADS IN THE SAND.
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS UNBRIDLED GREED.
DO THESE CORPORATE NEOFASCIST AND THEIR PROXIES IN WASHINGTON BELIEVE THAT THEY WILL BE PROTECTED BY THEIR MONEY?
PERHAPS THEY CAN PUT THEIR MONEY ALL IN A LARGE PILE AND CRAWL UNDERNEATH IT.
EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD PROVIDE NO PROTECTION, ONE MIGHT SEE THE RESULTING SUFFICATION AS POETIC JUSTICE.
